Story of Adam (AS) Collected

Bismillah. This is a collection of the story of Adam (AS) directly from the the Quran and the Sahihayn with minimal tafsir unless noted in brackets. Everything is from the Quran unless a footnote specifies it to be from a hadith.

When the Angels Were Told

Allah told the angels, “I plan to make a caretaker for earth from clay.”

The angels asked, “Will you make on earth someone who will spread corruption and spill blood? Even though we’re already here and do nothing but worship and praise you?”

Allah responded, “I know what you don’t know.”

When Iblis Met Adam

When Allah shaped Adam (AS)’s form from clay, he left him in Paradise for some time. Iblis walked around him, looking at him closely. When he noticed his hollow insides, he realized that man was a creature that would not be able to control his desires. [1]

When the Angels Prostrated

Allah said, “When I complete his creation and blow the soul into him, fall down into prostration for him.”

So, the angels prostrated, all of them entirely, except Iblis. He was a Jinn [that used to live with the angels due to his piety], and he refused to prostrate.

Iblis Gets Expelled

Allah asked Iblis, “What stopped you from prostrating when I commanded you?”

Iblis said, “How can I prostrate to something you created from mud and clay?”

Allah said, “I created him with my own hands! Did you suddenly become arrogant or were you always?”

Iblis said, “I am better than him! You created me from fire.”

Allah said, “Get out of here, you are expelled and dishonored. It is not for you to be arrogant in heaven. Rather, you will be cursed till the last day.”

Iblis said, “Is this really the one you honor over me? If you let me live until the day they are resurrected, I will definitely be able to misguide most of his descendants!”

Allah said, “You will live until a specified day.”

Iblis said, “Because you misguided me, I will wait for them on the straight path. I will attack them from the right and the left and from the front and the back, I will make sins attractive to them, and you will not find most of them grateful.”

Allah said, “Get out of here, cursed and rejected. Whoever follows you from them, I will put all of you in Hell together. Try whatever you want to misguide them and promise them all the lies you want. As for my servants, you will have on them no control.”

Then, Allah pronounced, “The truth, and the truth is what I say: I will fill Hell with you and whoever follows you altogether.”

Meeting the Angels

Then, Allah told Adam (AS), “Go and say salam to those angels there and listen to how they respond. That will be your greeting and the greeting of your descendants.”

Adam (AS) went to them and said, “Peace be upon you.”

They responded, “Peace and mercy be upon you.” [2]

When the Angels Were Answered

Allah taught Adam (AS) all the names. Then, he presented them to the angels and said, “Tell me their names if you think you know.”

The angels responded, “We only know what you have taught us, and you are all-Knowing and all-Wise.”

Allah said, “Adam, tell them their names.” When he told them, Allah said to the angels, “Didn’t I tell you I know what you don’t know? I know what you show openly and even what you used to hide.”

Life in Paradise

Then, Allah said, “Adam, live in Paradise with your wife. In here, you will never be hungry nor thirsty, and you will never feel hot nor be unclothed. Eat whatever you want here except this tree. If you eat from this tree, you will be a sinner.”

And Allah said, “Adam, Iblis is an enemy to you and your wife, so don’t let him expel you from Paradise.”

Iblis whispered to them, wanting to unclothe them. “Adam, what if I could show you a tree of eternal life and power.”

“Adam, Allah only forbade you from eating this tree because he did not want you to become like angels and become immortal.”

“I swear, I am only giving you sincere advice.”

He deceived them with delusions. When they forgot and tasted from the tree, their clothes fell off and their bodies were exposed. They frantically tried to cover themselves with leaves, and Allah called out to them, “Didn’t I forbid you from this tree? Didn’t I tell you Satan was a clear enemy?”

Adam disobeyed his Lord and fell into error.

Repentance

Then, Adam and his wife sought repentance and felt remorse, so Allah taught them what to say. They said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if you do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.”

Allah accepted their repentance, and He is always willing to accept repentance. Then, he said, “Descend from here all of you. Some of you are enemies to each other. On earth you have provision for the time being. There you will live, on it you will die, and from it you will return.”

He also said, “Whenever guidance comes to you from me, whoever follows that guidance will be safe. But, whoever disbelieves in my revelation and turns away from my reminder will have a measly life and will come on the Day of Resurrection blind. Those will be the people of the fire.”

Then, Allah said to you, “O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.” (7:27)
